The new future offered by electric vehicles
The project promoted by @Confartigianato Imprese Città Metropolitana di Venezia, Con-Ser S.r.l. and @Confartigianato Polesine has led to this year’s publication (July 2022) of Auto Elettrica: da Minaccia a Opportunità? (Electric Cars: From Threat to Opportunity?), which aims to portray the current situation in the car repair sector. It looks at the provinces of Venice and Rovigo, with the aim of extending the analysis to other areas where there are small businesses of this type.
The mechanic as entrepreneur
Considering the car repair sector, the publication looks at problems faced by garages in the light of the technological revolution. In fact, the changes now taking place, familiar to all, will eventually lead to the end of the production of cars with internal combustion engines, accompanied by the progressive increase in the proportion of #ElectricCars.
Mechanics will have to develop their skills in terms of technology and the services offered to customers, and this is a change that can no longer be postponed. Mechanics are figures who will increasingly have to become entrepreneurs in the context of vehicle repair. They will have to perform their work in such a way as to attract and retain increasing numbers of customers.
The qualitative and quantitative component
The survey in this publication is divided into two aspects, qualitative and quantitative. The latter aspect took the form of telephone surveys directed at car repair workshops in the metropolitan area of Venice and the Rovigo area, asking them a series of questions.
Vittorio Bacchetti¸ founder of Mondo Meccatronico and co-author of the book, supervised the qualitative part by selecting ten garages. Technological change was considered both as a pivotal factor but also potentially a problem by the businesses themselves, due to the progressive switch to electric, hybrid and plug-in cars. Repair shops will have to chart their route to their new future, considering that the European Union has decided that, from 2035, cars with internal combustion engines can no longer be sold.
